Chinese birth defects

A bunch of news organisations today reported that 7% of babies in China are born with defects, many due to the huge amounts of pollution in some places. The BBC has one such article. Given that the places I lived in Korea seemed to have a lot of kids with ADD, I now wonder if that had something to do with the terrible air at certain periods of the year and the water that many people would not drink themselves.

Sometimes people have no choice.

On the other hand, I thought about the fact that China has troubles providing jobs to those that need them. The fact that so many people will need assistance will certainly create some jobs. I am sure most of those people affected would have rather have spent money on other things though…

I still wonder what the list of birth defects are. Without guidance, a lot of things might be listed as a defect, even if they do not impair learning capabilities or perception of the world. I wouldn’t be surprised if other places that are polluted have even worse defect rates than China.
