I loved this place, and it is only rated two stars by the government. Probably a low rating because the entrance fee doesn’t earn anybody much money. I did buy a coconut to drink on the grounds, which at 3.5RMB is somewhat expensive (considering there are so many around Haikou, I can climb any tree and have one for free). The lack of tourists meant I had the gardens mostly to myself.

Hai Rui was a very upstanding official on Hainan Island, from several hundred years ago. There are pieces of caligraphy by Mao Zedong praising Hai Rui and recommending other people follow his example. Inside, though, I enjoyed the skill of the people who painted the ceilings.
