Metal coloured by lasers

I was pretty impressed by news that metal can have its colour changed by laser etching the surface. I very much look forward to the ability to buy bicycles that do not have paint on them, since I end up chipping the paint often. Of course, I might scratch off the laser etched layer. Either way, without paint, the metal would be a lot easier to recycle at the end of the bike or other product’s lifetime.

The other cool thing about the etching is that it is possible to make blacker than normal black surfaces. As blacker materials absorb more energy, it seems like this could be used to possibly make a cheaper/more efficient solar cell, since solar cells work by absorbing light energy.
