A staple of many ‘Chinese’ restaurants that are not in China, fortune cookies have long been popular. Most of them don’t even attempt to tell fortunes, but instead give some advice. Many Chinese restaurants have them, but good luck finding any within China.
As it turns out, fortune cookies actually come from Japan. Likely from the Kyoto 京都 area. It is interesting that they came to be associated with China, since a lot of Chinese things that have come into the West are thought of as Japanese. For example tofu, bonsai trees, kimonos (from the Tang dynasty of China), etc.
